...in 1814, Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax, was born in Dinant; he was to be the inventor of the saxophone in 1840.

...in 1854, American bandmaster and composer of over 100 marches, John Philip Sousa, aka 'The March King', was born in Washington, DC.

...in 1860, Polish pianist, composer and politician (was once Prime Minister of Poland), Ignace Jan Paderewski, was born.

...in 1893, Russian composer Pyotr Ilyitch Tchaikovsky died in a cholera epidemic in St. Petersburg, at the age of 53.
