The orchestra now known as the Pikes Peak Philharmonic was formed in 1965 to provide additional playing opportunities for students at Colorado College. The Colorado Springs Community Orchestra, as it was first called, was quickly expanded to include musicians from the rest of the community. In 1972, the Colorado Springs Symphony sponsored and controlled the group with Charles Ansbacher as its Music Director and principal Conductor. The sponsorship of the Symphony was dissolved in 1986 due to financial reasons. With this vital outlet for performing serious symphonic music virtually gone, several musicians from the group incorporated a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization under the name, Pikes Peak Civic Orchestra. In 1997, the name of the group was changed to Pikes Peak Philharmonic. The funding for the orchestra has been through the assessment of dues, door receipts, and outside donations.

Ute Pass Symphony Guild

Address
Woodland Park, CO 80866

Phone
(719) 822-1157

The Ute Pass Symphony Guild organized in 1979 for the purpose of funding concerts by what is now the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra. The all – volunteer board wrote letters, made phone calls and went door-to-door to raise the then substantial sum of $5,000. The basics have not changed, ensuring that the Symphony Above the Clouds remains a vital part of the area’s summer celebration.

After all these years we’re still an all volunteer board whose mission is very simple – to bring high quality music to the people of the Teller County region and to provide an admission free summer concert each year on July 5th performed by the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra. Symphony Above the Clouds, as the July 5th event is called, has become a signature event in Woodland Park and many who have attended in the past plan their vacations around being able to be here for the concert.

The Ute Pass Symphony Guild does not limit its activities to just that concert, however. Each year we raise funds and provide classroom support so that all the children in Teller County can attend, without cost, the annual Children’s Concert at the Pikes Peak Center performed by the Colorado Springs Philharmonic Orchestra. In 2012 we were also able to bring an internationally known pianist to Woodland Park and arrange for him to perform for the students of the area, again without cost to the school district or the students. We feel strongly that at a time when school district budgets have little room for extras, it is incumbent upon us to try to fill that void where possible.
